About This Scholarship

This program offers language instruction in fifteen critical languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. The scholarship covers all program costs, including travel, tuition, housing, meals, and cultural activities.

The Critical Language Scholarship Program is a fully-funded scholarship program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The program is designed to provide intensive language and cultural immersion opportunities for American undergraduate and graduate students in languages that are considered critical to U.S. national security and economic competitiveness.

The CLS Program is a prestigious opportunity for students to gain valuable language skills and cultural understanding, as well as to develop relationships with other students from diverse backgrounds and countries.

Eligibility Criteria For Critical Language Scholarships

The Critical Language Scholarship Program is a fully-funded language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. The eligibility criteria for the CLS program are as follows:

  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time of application.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. degree-granting program at the undergraduate or graduate level at the time of submission of this application. Community college students who have not yet earned a bachelor’s degree are also eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must have completed at least one year of study at the undergraduate level or graduate level by the beginning of the CLS program.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of the CLS program.
  • Applicants must be able to receive a U.S. passport before the beginning of the CLS program.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in learning a critical language that is less commonly taught in U.S. institutions of higher education.
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
