About This Scholarship

The AIA Site Preservation Grant is a grant program offered by the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) to support archaeological site preservation efforts around the world. The grant is designed to provide financial assistance to individuals and organizations working to protect and preserve archaeological sites, monuments, and structures.

The AIA Site Preservation Grant funds projects that involve site management, conservation, documentation, education, and outreach. These projects may include activities such as site stabilization, development of site management plans, documentation and mapping of site features, public education and interpretation, and training of local site caretakers.

Grants are available to individuals and organizations working in any country, but priority is given to projects that are located in countries where the cultural heritage is under threat, or where there are limited resources available for site preservation.

The AIA Site Preservation Grant program accepts applications on a rolling basis throughout the year, and interested individuals or organizations can visit the AIA’s website for more information on how to apply.

Eligibility Criteria For AIA Site Preservation Grant

To be eligible for the AIA Site Preservation Grant, applicants must be either a nonprofit organization or an individual working in collaboration with a nonprofit organization. The project must be focused on the preservation and conservation of an archaeological site or cultural heritage property, and the site must be in danger of damage or destruction due to natural disasters, human intervention, or other threats.

The AIA Site Preservation Grant is awarded on a competitive basis, and the selection process is based on the following criteria:

  • Significance of the site: The site must have significant cultural, historical, or archaeological value.
  • Urgency of the preservation project: The project must be focused on addressing an urgent need, such as stabilizing a structure, protecting an excavation, or mitigating damage from a natural disaster.
  • Feasibility of the project: The project must be technically feasible and have a clear plan for implementation.
  • Sustainability of the project: The project must have a plan for long-term preservation and conservation of the site.
