The prize is awarded to a select group of up to ten female undergraduates each year who have demonstrated exceptional mathematical ability, research potential, and academic achievement. Nominees are evaluated based on their performance in mathematics courses, research experience, awards and honors, and letters of recommendation.

The Alice T. Schafer Mathematics Prize is designed to encourage and support women who are interested in pursuing careers in mathematics.
