About This Scholarship

If you are a full-time or part-time post-secondary student who is legally blind or a part-time post-secondary student who works at least 32 hours per week and is legally blind, you may want to consider applying for the ACB Scholarship Program. This program aims to assist legally blind post-secondary students in covering their education costs and adaptive technology. Each year, multiple students are awarded between $2,000 and $7,500. Additionally, there is no essay requirement for the application. To apply, you must provide proof of blindness, a transcript, two letters of recommendation, and proof of enrollment.

Eligibility Criteria For American Council of the Blind’s (ACB) Scholarship Program

  • Legally Blind Status: Applicants must be legally blind, meaning they have a visual acuity of 20/200 or less in their better eye with corrective lenses or a visual field of 20 degrees or less.
  • Enrollment in Post-Secondary Education: Applicants must be enrolled in or have been accepted to a post-secondary educational institution, which includes universities, colleges, technical schools, and trade schools. The program is open to both part-time and full-time students.
  • Academic Performance: Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. A transcript must be submitted with the application.
  • Proof of Blindness: Applicants must provide documentation of their legal blindness, such as a doctor’s note or certification from a state vocational rehabilitation agency.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Applicants must provide two letters of recommendation from individuals who are not family members. These letters should speak to the applicant’s character, academic abilities, and potential for success.
  • Working Students: Part-time post-secondary students who work at least 32 hours per week can apply for the scholarship program.
  • No Essay Required: Unlike some scholarship programs, the ACB Scholarship Program does not require applicants to submit an essay.
