About This Scholarship

The Annual Sphinx Competition is a music competition that is held annually in Detroit, Michigan, USA. The competition is open to young Black and Latinx classical string instrumentalists, ages 18 and under, who are based in the United States. The competition is hosted by the Sphinx Organization, a national nonprofit organization that aims to increase diversity in classical music.

The Sphinx Competition is divided into three categories: Junior Division (ages 18 and under), Senior Division (ages 18 and under), and the Solo Competition (ages 18-30). The competition offers a variety of prizes, including cash awards, scholarships, and performance opportunities with major orchestras.

The competition consists of multiple rounds, including a preliminary round, semifinal round, and final round. Participants are judged by a panel of distinguished musicians and industry professionals based on their technical proficiency, musicality, and overall performance.

The Annual Sphinx Competition is an important opportunity for young Black and Latinx string players to showcase their talents, receive recognition, and advance their careers in classical music. The competition helps to promote diversity and inclusion in classical music and provides a platform for underrepresented musicians to excel and gain visibility in the industry.
