About This Scholarship

The Breaking Barriers Student Athlete Scholarship is a program offered by the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) to recognize and reward student-athletes who have overcome adversity in their lives. The scholarship is designed to support students who have faced significant challenges or barriers and have demonstrated a commitment to overcoming those obstacles. The scholarship awards range from $500 to $5,000 and are renewable for up to four years. 

This scholarship provides an excellent opportunity for student-athletes who have demonstrated resilience and determination in the face of adversity to receive financial support for their college education. It also recognizes the importance of sports in promoting personal growth and developing important life skills such as perseverance, teamwork, and leadership.

Eligibility Criteria For Arizona Breaking Barriers Student Athlete Scholarship

The Arizona Breaking Barriers Student Athlete Scholarship is a program offered by the Arizona Sports and Entertainment Commission (ASEC) to support high school senior student-athletes in Arizona who have demonstrated a commitment to breaking down barriers and promoting diversity and inclusion in their communities.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a high school senior student-athlete who has participated in at least one varsity-level sport during their high school career.
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and must demonstrate a commitment to breaking down barriers and promoting diversity and inclusion in their school or community. This can be demonstrated through leadership roles, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, or other relevant experiences.
  • Plan to attend an accredited four-year college or university in the fall following their high school graduation.
  • Be a legal resident of Arizona.

The scholarship award is $5,000 and can be used to cover tuition, fees, books, or other educational expenses at an accredited four-year college or university. The scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years provided the recipient maintains a minimum GPA of 3.0 and remains in good standing at their college or university.
