About This Scholarship

If you’re a New York resident passionate about pursuing a physical or occupational therapy career, you may qualify for the Arthur W. Pense Scholarship. This scholarship is available to all New York State residents enrolled in a physical or occupational therapy degree program. The Arc New York, a nonprofit organization that strives to provide exceptional life opportunities to people with developmental disabilities, offers the scholarship in honor of Dr. Arthur W. Pense, the former NYS Assistant Commissioner of Mental Hygiene who has played a significant role in developing mental health programs for the New York community. Each year, one recipient is selected to receive a $3,000 scholarship to support their postsecondary education. The Arthur W. Pense Scholarship is available to all New York State residents enrolled in a physical or occupational therapy degree program. The recipient may be eligible for a portion of the scholarship paid by various New York State government agencies. In addition to the scholarship, the recipient may receive career training and other services to help them succeed in physical and occupational therapy. 

  • To apply for this scholarship, you must submit an application that includes a personal essay, answers to three short questions about your chosen profession, letters of recommendation from two individuals familiar with your work, and other information not listed in this paragraph.
  •  The Arthur W. Pense Scholarship program offers financial assistance to New York State residents pursuing a physical or occupational therapy degree. 
  • Arc New York, a nonprofit organization, offers the scholarship to provide life opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities. To be eligible, applicants must be residents of New York State and currently enrolled in a physical or occupational therapy degree program.

Eligibility Criteria For Arthur W. Pense Scholarship

  • College & Graduate Student: New York Resident currently enrolled in a physical or occupational therapy degree program.
  • Proof of residency: Must provide proof of residency.
  • Student Status: Undergraduate, Graduate, Doctoral, or Physical and Occupational Therapy students must currently enroll in a degree program to qualify for this scholarship.
  • The purpose of the Award: The purpose of the Arthur W. Pense Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to New York State residents pursuing a physical or occupational therapy degree. The scholarship will be awarded based on academic achievement, need, and an application that includes an essay, autobiographical sketch, and responses to three short questions relating to their chosen profession.
  • Academic Requirements: Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. To qualify, graduate students must have completed at least one semester as of the award application deadline.
  • Personal statement: You must submit a personal statement.
  • Letters of recommendation: You must submit two letters of recommendation.
  • Timing Requirements: Applications must be received by November 1. Applications received after November 1 are considered for the following year’s scholarship.
  • Impact Statement: All applicants will receive an email to complete and submit a 3-minute video to demonstrate how they intend to use their education and training in the future. The purpose of this is to “inspire” others in your field. Applications without an impact statement are not considered.
  • Demonstrated passion for physical or occupational therapy: Must demonstrate a passion for physical or occupational therapy. Awards are not made based on financial need.
  • Legal Terms and Conditions: The scholarship is open to residents of New York State, regardless of race, color, creed, or national origin. All applicants must be 18 or older as of the date of application. Scholarship recipients may not accept other awards from the Arc New York program. They may not concurrently apply for this scholarship with any other scholarship offered by the Arc New York Foundation.
  • Transcripts: You must submit an unofficial transcript for review. Upon enrollment in the school, program, or institution, official transcripts are required.
  • Employment: Must not be employed as a postsecondary student. This includes, but is not limited to, teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and any other type of employment as a student.
