About This Scholarship

Do you have an interest in teaching physics to students in high school? If this describes you, you might be interested in applying for the Barbara Lotze Scholarship for Future Physics Teachers. This grant is available to high school seniors and undergraduate students planning on working as high school physics teachers when they graduate. About five students are selected to receive the scholarship each year, made possible by an endowment established with money donated by Barbara Lotze. Since its inception in 1999, the Barbara Lotze Scholarship has been awarded to more than eighty deserving students. To be eligible for the Barbara Lotze Scholarship, you must be at least a high school senior who plans to become a physics teacher. You must also have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 and submit an essay explaining why you are interested in working as a high school physics teacher and how you plan to use your degree to help provide students with a solid basis for any career they choose to pursue.

Eligibility Criteria For Barbara Lotze Scholarship for Future Physics Teachers

  • Citizenship and Residency: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal residents. There is no requirement for state residency.
  • Academic Requirements: Applicants must plan to enroll or be currently enrolled in an accredited four-year undergraduate institution in the United States. Applicants must pursue, or intend to pursue, a degree in physics education, including courses in physics and education.
  • GPA: Applicants must have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in their overall and physics coursework.
  • Enrollment Status: Applicants may be high school seniors, college freshmen, sophomores, or juniors at the time of application. Applicants must have plans to pursue a career in physics education.
  • Letter of Recommendation: Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from a physics teacher or professor who knows them well and can attest to their potential as future physics teachers,
