In 2003, the Florence Turner Karlin Scholarship was created. Florence attended Trumbull High School and graduated there. Prior to serving in the U.S. Navy for two years, she spent two years attending Kearney State College and teaching in the primary grades in Wauneta and Kearney. She pursued her degree at Hastings College after leaving the service. She started working as a teacher in Denver Public Schools in 1948. Later, she enrolled in Denver University’s graduate programme where she graduated with a master’s degree. She worked as a Fulbright Exchange Teacher in Ireland in 1954–1955.
Over the course of her 42-year teaching career, Florence taught over a thousand kids how to read. At 88 years old, Florence passed away in 2003. In his memory, Florence turner karlin scholarship was started.
