About This Scholarship

The Kaplun Essay Contest is an annual scholarship essay contest for Jewish students in the United States and Canada. It was established in 1955 by Morris J. Kaplun, a prominent Jewish leader who sought to promote Jewish education and inspire young people to think critically about important issues affecting the Jewish community and society at large.

The contest is open to students in grades 7-12 and college undergraduate students. Each year, contestants are asked to write an essay on a specific topic related to Jewish values, history, or culture. The essay prompt changes each year, but it always requires contestants to engage in critical thinking and articulate their thoughts clearly and persuasively.

Winners of the contest receive a cash prize to help with their education expenses. The contest is administered by the Morris J. and Betty Kaplun Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports Jewish education and community organizations.

Eligibility Criteria For Kaplun Essay Contest

The Morris J. and Betty Kaplun Foundation sponsors an annual essay contest for students in grades 7-12. The eligibility criteria for the Kaplun Essay Contest are as follows:

  • Students must be in grades 7-12 in the academic year in which the contest is held.
  • Students must submit an original essay on the given topic for that year’s contest.
  • Essays must be the original work of the student and must not have been previously published.
  • Essays must be written in English and must be no more than 1,500 words in length.
  • Students must submit their essays online or by mail by the contest deadline.
  • In addition to meeting the above eligibility criteria, applicants must also follow the guidelines and rules for the contest, including formatting and submission requirements.

The Kaplun Essay Contest is designed to encourage students to think critically and creatively about important issues facing society today. The essay topics are typically related to Jewish values and themes, but applicants do not need to be Jewish to participate. The scholarship awards aim to recognize and support the academic achievement and creative expression of young students.
