About This Scholarship

The MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (M3 Challenge), commonly known as the M3 Challenge, is a mathematical modeling competition for high school students in the United States. The competition is organized by MathWorks, a leading provider of mathematical computing software, in partnership with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).

The M3 Challenge aims to encourage students to apply mathematical modeling to real-world problems and develop their problem-solving and teamwork skills. Participating teams, consisting of three to five high school students and one teacher-coach, compete by analyzing and solving a complex, open-ended problem over the course of a weekend.

The M3 Challenge emphasizes the application of mathematics to address real-world issues, such as environmental, social, economic, or technological problems. The competition evaluates teams based on the clarity of their mathematical analysis, the creativity of their modeling approach, and the effectiveness of their solutions.

Eligibility Criteria For MathWorks Math Modeling (M3 Challenge)

The MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge is a mathematical modeling competition for high school students. The eligibility criteria for the M3 Challenge typically include the following:

  • Grade Level: The competition is open to high school students in the United States, typically in grades 11 and 12. Some competitions may allow participation from younger students as well.
  • Team Size: Students participate in teams of three to five members. Teams must be formed within the same high school or home school association.
  • Participation Limit: Each high school can typically submit only one team for the competition. This is to ensure fair representation and equal opportunities for all schools.
  • U.S. Residency: The competition is usually limited to students who are legal residents or citizens of the United States. Specific residency requirements may vary depending on the competition year and rules.
  • Previous Participation: Students who have participated in the M3 Challenge in previous years may be ineligible to participate again. This is to allow for wider participation and give new students an opportunity to engage in the competition.
