About This Scholarship

This prize provides a college scholarship to one young, promising writer in honour of Michelle Obama’s long-standing dedication to mentoring and education, as well as her inspiring leadership in empowering young people to find the power of expressing their own experiences. We are passionate about supporting various perspectives and stories as well as fostering the next generation of authors and readers.

This honour is one of Penguin Random House’s five creative writing awards. For creative poetry, memoir/personal essay, fiction/drama, and spoken word compositions, public high school students have received more than $2.8 million through this programme since it began. Every year, hundreds of young writers participate in this iconic programme, which demonstrates our constant dedication to discovering and fostering fresh creative talent.
