About This Scholarship

NAJA Scholarships refer to the scholarship opportunities offered by the Native American Journalists Association (NAJA). NAJA is an organization that supports and promotes Indigenous journalists, media professionals, and students. NAJA Scholarships are designed to assist Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and First Nations students pursuing careers in journalism, media, or related fields. These scholarships aim to provide financial assistance and support to help students further their education and develop their skills in journalism.

Eligibility Criteria For NAJA Scholarships

here are the general eligibility criteria for NAJA Scholarships based on my knowledge cutoff in September 2021:

  • Native American, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian heritage: To be eligible for NAJA scholarships, applicants must be able to provide proof of their Native American, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian heritage. This is typically demonstrated through tribal enrollment or descent verification.
  • Journalism or media-related field: The scholarships are typically open to students pursuing a degree in journalism, media, communications, or a related field. This can include print, broadcast, digital, or multimedia journalism.
  • Enrollment status: NAJA scholarships may be available to both undergraduate and graduate students. The specific requirements may vary for each scholarship, so it’s important to review the details of each individual scholarship for the specific enrollment status requirements.
  • Academic achievement: NAJA scholarships may consider applicants’ academic records, including GPA and academic performance in relevant coursework.
  • Demonstrated interest in journalism: Applicants are often required to show a strong interest in journalism and a commitment to pursuing a career in the field. This can be demonstrated through previous journalism experience, internships, or writing samples.
  • Financial need: Some NAJA scholarships may take into account the applicant’s financial need as a factor in the selection process. This can vary depending on the specific scholarship.
  • Application requirements: NAJA scholarships typically require applicants to submit an application form, official transcripts, letters of recommendation, a personal statement or essay, and samples of their work (e.g., articles, videos, or multimedia projects).
