About This Scholarship

Students are encouraged to seek careers as math and science teachers in secondary school by the NYS Math and Science Teaching Incentive Program. (grades 7-12). Students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees are eligible for awards in return for five years of full-time employment as math or science teachers in secondary schools in New York State.

The annual award payment for full-time study is equivalent to the real tuition charged at the State University of New York (SUNY) for an undergraduate program, or the annual tuition charged to a NYS resident student, whichever is less.

A recipient is eligible to receive yearly award payments while enrolled in an approved program that leads to permanent certification as a secondary math or science teacher for a period of not more than four academic years of full-time undergraduate study and one academic year of full-time graduate study.

Eligibility Criteria For NYS Math & Science Teaching Incentive Program

All college students, including those in their first year, who satisfy the eligibility criteria below are eligible for this award program.

A candidate must:

  • Be enrolled full-time in an approved undergraduate or graduate program at a degree-granting school in NYS leading to a job as a math or science teacher in secondary education; be a citizen of the United States or an eligible non-citizen; Be attending a college located in NYS;
  • Only for return receivers have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better; not have previously received a scholarship from the NYS Masters-in-Education Teacher Incentive Scholarship Program;
  • Sign a Service Contract promising to work five years straight, full-time, as a math or science instructor in secondary school in New York State. View the utility contract’s terms and conditions;
  • Be in compliance with all service requirements imposed by a NYS award, be in non-default position with respect to any student loans taken out under any NYS or federal education loan program, or repay any NYS award.
