About This Scholarship

The Patriot’s Pen Youth Essay Contest is an annual essay competition sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) organization. The contest is open to students in grades 6-8 (middle school) in the United States.The Patriot’s Pen Youth Essay Contest awards scholarships to the top winners, with the top national prize being $5,000. State-level winners are also awarded prizes, and local VFW Posts may offer additional awards as well.

The contest is designed to encourage students to develop their writing skills and to think about patriotic themes and issues. It is also intended to help students better understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by veterans and their families.

Eligibility Criteria For Patriot’s Pen Youth Essay Contest

The Patriot’s Pen Youth Essay Contest is a scholarship program designed to promote patriotism among middle school students in the United States. The eligibility criteria for this scholarship include:

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a public, private, or parochial middle school or home study program in the United States.
  • Applicants must be in grades 6, 7, or 8 at the time of entry.
  • Applicants must submit a typewritten essay of no fewer than 300 words and no more than 400 words on the theme assigned for that year’s contest. The theme changes annually, and is typically related to patriotism or American history.
  • Applicants must submit their essay to a local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post, along with a completed entry form.

In addition to meeting the eligibility criteria, scholarship applicants are evaluated based on the content, accuracy, and originality of their essay, as well as their use of language and writing style.
