About This Scholarship

If you’re a student who is a member of AAJA and interested in pursuing sports journalism as a major, then consider applying for the Sports Task Force / Al Young Sports Journalism Scholarship. The scholarship is available to full-time undergraduate AAJA members currently studying or planning to study journalism and aiming for a career in sports journalism. The AAJA is a non-profit organization that promotes diversity and ensures accurate coverage of communities of color. They offer scholarships to support students pursuing sports journalism and media careers. The Al Young Sports Journalism Scholarship is named after an Asian American pioneer in sports media. Every year, one aspiring Asian sports journalist is selected to receive a $2,000 scholarship to assist with their educational expenses. By receiving this scholarship, the recipient helps to continue Al Young’s legacy.

Eligibility Criteria For Sports Task Force / Al Young Sports Journalism Scholarship

  • AAJA Membership: Applicants must be members of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) to be considered for the scholarship. Membership must be active during application and throughout the scholarship award period.
  • Undergraduate Enrollment: Applicants must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program at an accredited college or university in the United States. The program must lead to a degree in journalism or a related field. Students in their final year of undergraduate studies are also eligible to apply.
  • Interest in Sports Journalism: Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in sports journalism through coursework, internships, or work experience. They must also plan to pursue a career in sports journalism or media.
  • Academic Achievement: Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. They must provide official transcripts to support their academic achievements.
  • Recommendation Letters: Applicants must provide two letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to their academic performance, journalistic abilities, and potential as sports journalists.
  • Essay and Work Samples: Applicants must submit a personal essay describing their interest in sports journalism and their career plans. They must also provide work samples demonstrating their journalistic abilities and experience in sports reporting or related fields.
