About This Scholarship

The Bill H. James Foundation Scholarship for Aspiring African American Engineers is a scholarship program that supports African American students who are interested in pursuing careers in engineering. The scholarship is named after Bill H. James, a pioneering engineer who worked for NASA and helped to develop the Apollo spacecraft.

Scholarships for African-American/Black (non-Hispanic) U.S. citizens who plan to enrol in their junior or senior year of college or graduate school the following academic year and who have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 at an institution in California.

The scholarship provides financial support of up to $5,000 per year for up to four years to help cover tuition, fees, books, and other educational expenses. Scholarship recipients are selected based on academic achievement, leadership potential, and their demonstrated commitment to the field of engineering.

Eligibility Criteria For The Bill H. James Foundation Scholarship for Aspiring African American Engineers

The Bill H. James Foundation Scholarship for Aspiring African American Engineers is designed to support African American students who are interested in pursuing a career in engineering. The eligibility criteria for the scholarship are:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must be of African American descent.
  • Must be enrolled or planning to enroll full-time in an ABET-accredited engineering program at a college or university in the United States.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Must demonstrate financial need.
  • Must submit an official transcript, two letters of recommendation, and a personal statement or essay.

Preference is given to applicants who are incoming freshmen or rising sophomores, but students at any level of their engineering program may apply. The scholarship provides financial support to help cover tuition, fees, books, and other educational expenses. The scholarship amount may vary depending on the availability of funds and the number of qualified applicants.
