Eligibility Criteria For The Gates Scholarship Program

The Gates Scholarship is a highly competitive, full-ride scholarship that supports outstanding, minority high school seniors who have demonstrated leadership ability, academic excellence, and a commitment to serving their communities. To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • They must be a high school senior from at least one of the following ethnicities: African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian & Pacific Islander American, and/or Hispanic American.
  • They must be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident.
  • They must have a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale.
  • They must demonstrate leadership ability through participation in community service, extracurricular activities, or other similar leadership experiences.
  • They must demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • They must be planning to enroll full-time in a four-year degree program at an accredited, nonprofit U.S. college or university in the fall immediately following high school graduation.
  • They must have outstanding personal qualities, such as perseverance, ambition, and a strong work ethic.
