Seniors in high school interested in pursuing a career in journalism at an authorized college or university in the United States are eligible to apply for the award. The National Press Club Journalism Institute provides this fellowship to attract aspiring journalists and increase the industry’s diversity. The institute’s objective is to encourage the development of an engaged community through a free press and to provide journalists with the skills and standards necessary to inform the general public. 

  • The scholarship will provide each recipient with a one-time award of $5,000, which may be renewed for up to three years. We encourage you to apply if you are interested in pursuing a career in journalism and are searching for financial assistance with your education. 
  • With this award, you can pursue the education of your choice without any financial burden. The scholarship is open to students pursuing a career in journalism and coming from underrepresented communities, including people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people with disabilities.

Eligibility Criteria For The Scholarship for Journalism Diversity Honoring Julie Schoo

  • Pursuing a degree in journalism: College students and high school seniors planning on pursuing a career in journalism are eligible for this scholarship. You should be able to submit an application in which you have been accepted into an approved college or university for a degree program in journalism. This scholarship does not cover room and board but does cover tuition, books, supplies, and other expenses associated with your education.
  • Personal statement: You should provide a personal statement that describes your visions, career plans, and academic background. The statement must include a brief description of your life, including the circumstances under which you became interested in journalism. You should discuss how you chose journalism as a career path and provide information regarding your preparation for further study.
  • Full-time status: It means earning at least 12 credit hours per semester or 20 credit hours during the school year. You should be able to provide documentation of your status as a full-time student, including a description of your course schedule, enrollment dates, credit hours, specific number of semester and quarter hours, and an official transcript.
  • Evidence of financial need: Personal and financial information will be used to decide whether you are eligible for this scholarship. You must have been accepted at an accredited college or university where you will be pursuing a degree program in journalism.
  • Native, including second-generation American: You must be a U.S.-born citizen of, or have at least one parent of a U.S.-born citizen of Japanese ancestry. You must be able to provide documentation such as your birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or adoption paperwork.
