About This Scholarship

Have you been treated for cancer, and are you enrolled in or planning to attend college? If this describes you, you should consider applying for a scholarship from the Simon Cancer Foundation. Students who have had cancer in the past and who will be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in the United States this upcoming Fall are eligible for the funding. Harvey Simon, who courageously fought his multiple myeloma, inspired the establishment of the Simon Cancer Foundation. By financial aid in the form of scholarships and contributions to other educational initiatives, the foundation works toward its mission of assisting people living with cancer in achieving their educational objectives. The annual Simon Cancer Foundation Scholarship winners receive monetary aid for their continued studies. The foundation is an independent non-profit organization that promotes research, education, and advocacy for cancer patients.

  • The Simon Cancer Foundation is a leader in cancer research and charitable efforts. U.S. students intending to enroll in a 4-year college or university in the upcoming Fall, including graduate students, can apply for this scholarship.
  • Those previously receiving The Simon Cancer Foundation scholarship are ineligible to reapply. Applicants must sign an affidavit confirming that they have experienced any form of cancer at some point.
  • The applicant must also have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, although there are no restrictions on which degree program you may pursue at your college or university.

Eligibility Criteria For The Simon Cancer Foundation Scholarship

  • Educational Requirements: This scholarship is only open to U.S. college students who have been treated for cancer and will be enrolled in a 4-year undergraduate or graduate program as of fall 2008. Applicants must also submit an essay about why the Simon Cancer Foundation is so important to them, plus an original photo of themselves (self-portrait).
  • Health Requirements: The applicant must have been given a cancer diagnosis by a physician. The applicant’s oncologist must confirm in writing that the applicant is currently free of cancer. The Simon Cancer Foundation Scholarship Program is not open to those students who have been treated for cancer more than five (5) years ago.
  • Financial Requirements: Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need with acceptable proof of financial resources, which should include tax returns and any other available documentation of income, assets, and outstanding debt as necessary.
  • Application Process: The applicant must submit an original, non-plagiarized 500-word essay. The essay should discuss a personal experience with cancer and how this has affected your life. Applicants must also submit a photo of themselves (self-portrait) by scanning it or taking a digital photograph. Once the Simon Cancer Foundation Scholarship Committee has reviewed and approved the application, the student will be sent a formal letter and check in response from Simon Cancer Foundation.
  • Scholarship Renewal: The Simon Cancer Foundation Scholarship Program is only open to recipients for their first year of college. Applicants awarded the scholarship must use the money toward their most important financial needs (debt repayment, tuition, books, etc.). The students who earn a Simon Cancer Foundation Scholarship again may only reapply once they have been out of school for at least four years.
