About This Scholarship

If you’re a high school senior passionate about writing or public speaking and plan to attend college, apply for the U.S. Creative Writing Awards Scholarship. This scholarship is available to high school seniors who submit an original work of fiction, drama, poetry, memoir/personal essay, or spoken word piece. The program is funded by Penguin Random House, a multinational publishing company, and is designed to encourage and promote diverse storytelling among the next generation of authors. Since 1993, the program has awarded more than $2.8 million in scholarships to empower and celebrate young writers. Every year, five recipients, one for each category, are selected and can receive up to $10,000 towards their college expenses.

Eligibility Criteria For U.S. Creative Writing Awards Scholarship

  • Applicant’s academic level: The scholarship is open to high school seniors who plan to attend college.
  • Writing or speaking interest: Applicants must have a passion for writing or public speaking and be interested in creating an original work of fiction, drama, poetry, memoir/personal essay, or spoken word piece.
  • Nationality: The scholarship is available to students in the United States.
  • The originality of the work: Applicants must submit an original piece of work that has yet to be previously published or submitted for publication.
  • Scholarship funding: The scholarship is funded by Penguin Random House and is designed to encourage and promote diverse storytelling among the next generation of authors.
  • Scholarship amount: Five recipients, one for each category, are selected each year and can receive up to $10,000 towards their college expenses.
