About This Scholarship

The University of Maryland Banneker/Key Scholarship is a highly selective scholarship program for incoming freshman students at the University of Maryland, College Park. The scholarship is named after Benjamin Banneker, a renowned African American mathematician, scientist, and astronomer, and Francis Scott Key, the author of the U.S. national anthem and a prominent Maryland attorney.

The Banneker/Key Scholarship provides full tuition, room and board, and a book allowance for up to four years of undergraduate study at the University of Maryland. In addition to financial support, the scholarship offers students a comprehensive program that includes academic, social, and cultural opportunities designed to enhance their leadership skills and academic achievement.

The application process for the Banneker/Key Scholarship is highly competitive and involves submitting a separate scholarship application, along with a resume, personal statement, and two letters of recommendation. Finalists are invited to participate in an on-campus interview, after which the scholarship recipients are selected.

Eligibility Criteria For University of Maryland Banneker/Key Scholarship

The scholarship is named after Benjamin Banneker and Francis Scott Key, two Marylanders who played significant roles in American history.

To be eligible for the Banneker/Key Scholarship-

  • All the students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and have applied for admission to the University of Maryland by the early action deadline of November 1st. 
  • Applicants must have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.5 and a minimum SAT score of 1450 or ACT score of 33.

In addition to academic achievement, applicants are evaluated on their leadership potential and involvement in extracurricular activities, as well as their commitment to community service and civic engagement. Finalists for the scholarship are invited to participate in an interview process, which includes a group discussion and individual interviews.
