About This Scholarship

The “When There Are Nine” (WTAN) Scholarship is a program launched by the American Bar Association (ABA) Commission on Women in the Profession in honor of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The scholarship aims to support women pursuing a law degree or advancing their legal career.

The scholarship provides financial assistance of up to $5,000 to women who are enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school, pursuing an LLM degree at an ABA-accredited law school, or taking a bar exam in any state in the United States. The scholarship is awarded annually, and the selection criteria include academic achievement, leadership, and a demonstrated commitment to advancing women’s rights.

The WTAN Scholarship is part of the ABA’s broader efforts to advance gender equity in the legal profession, particularly in leadership positions. The scholarship’s name comes from Justice Ginsburg’s response to the question of when there will be enough women on the Supreme Court, to which she famously replied, “When there are nine.”
