About This Scholarship

Are you a student who identifies as BIPOC and is strongly interested in the weather? You might consider applying for the American Meteorological Society’s Scholarship for Underserved Areas! The American Meteorological Society (AMS) recognizes the value of diversity in its membership. It is dedicated to ensuring that all members can participate fairly and equally. They are committed to promoting fundamental principles such as diversity, inclusiveness, and equity in all facets of the atmospheric, oceanographic, and hydrologic sciences. As a result, they provide bursaries of $6,000 each year to students who identify as BIPOC and intend to pursue a degree in one of the atmospheric sciences. The total scholarship amount of $6,000 is awarded to the recipients of the scholarships in two equal parts: $3,000 during their initial year, and $3,000 for their second year, provided that they complete their first year

Eligibility Criteria For AMS Scholarship for Underserved Communities

The AMS (American Mathematical Society) offers scholarships for students from underserved communities pursuing mathematics degrees. The eligibility criteria for these scholarships are as follows:

  • Citizenship/Residency: Applicants must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or DACA recipients.
  • Underserved Community: Applicants must be from a historically underserved community, including but not limited to African American, Hispanic/Latinx, and Native American communities.
  • Academic Standing: Applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Enrollment: Applicants must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as full-time students in a degree-granting program in mathematics at an accredited U.S. institution.
  • Financial Need: Applicants must demonstrate financial need through the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
  • Recommendation Letters: Applicants must provide at least two letters of recommendation from mathematics instructors or others who can attest to their academic ability and potential.

Personal Statement/Essay: Applicants must submit a personal statement or essay that describes their mathematical background, interest in mathematics, and how they plan to use their degree in mathematics to benefit their community.
