After graduating from Cortland High School, Leonard attended Nebraska Wesleyan University to complete his undergraduate studies. Later, he graduated from Boston University of Theology with graduate degrees. In West Brookfield, Massachusetts, on August 22, 1947, Leonard and Alta (Campbell) got married. Len and Alta were missionaries in Monrovia, Liberia, a country in west Africa, after being married. After moving back to Nebraska, Leonard raised their three children and served in a number of United Methodist congregations. In 1977, Leonard left the ministry. Later, Len worked for ALPO in Crete and started his own business as an insurance agent. Len was a master mason, a farmer, and a Nebraska Civil Air Patrol major in addition to serving in the church. He served as the wing’s assistant chaplain as well.
