About This Scholarship

Three scholarships will be given each year through the Eleanor Wegg Poetry Scholarship. There will be three $500 awards and one $1000 award, respectively. If you are a rising junior or senior undergraduate student at one of the University of Michigan campuses majoring in English, you are eligible to apply for this award. The application deadline is January 1. Poems must be 20 lines or fewer (the title and spaces between stanzas do not count), be the author’s original work, and not have been professionally published—that is, not have been done so for which the author earned a sizable financial reward.

The entries will be evaluated based on their originality, ingenuity, and mastery of poetic language. There are no restrictions on topic or fashion.

Eligibility Criteria For Eleanor Wegg Poetry Scholarship

Here are some general factors that may be considered for poetry scholarships:

  • Field of Study: The scholarship is likely open to students studying or intending to study poetry or creative writing, with a focus on poetry. It may be limited to undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in these fields.
  • Portfolio or Writing Sample: Applicants may be required to submit a portfolio or writing sample of their original poetry. This allows the scholarship committee to evaluate the applicant’s writing skills, creativity, and potential as a poet.
  • Academic Achievement: Some poetry scholarships may consider the applicant’s academic performance, such as their GPA or class rank. They may require a minimum GPA or specific academic standards to be met.
  • Letters of Recommendation: The scholarship program may require applicants to provide letters of recommendation from teachers, professors, or mentors who can speak to their writing abilities, creativity, and potential as a poet.
  • Personal Statement: Many scholarship applications, including poetry scholarships, may require applicants to submit a personal statement or essay. This allows applicants to explain their passion for poetry, their writing goals, and how the scholarship would support their education and development as a poet.
