About This Scholarship

The Dr. Aura-Lee A. and James Hobbs Pittenger American History Scholarship is a program for undergraduate students pursuing a degree in American history or a related field. The scholarship is administered by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a non-profit organization that promotes historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The scholarship provides financial assistance of up to $2,000 to eligible students who demonstrate academic excellence, financial need, and a commitment to studying American history. Applicants must be citizens of the United States and enrolled in an accredited college or university in the United States. To apply for the scholarship, students must submit a completed application form, transcripts of their academic records, two letters of recommendation, and an essay on a topic related to American history.  The scholarship was established by Dr. Aura-Lee A. and James Hobbs Pittenger in memory of their ancestors who served in the American Revolution. Since its inception, the scholarship has provided financial assistance to many students dedicated to studying American history and related fields.

Eligibility Criteria For Dr. Aura-Lee A. and James Hobbs Pittenger American History Scholarship

  • Citizenship: Applicants must be citizens of the United States.
  • Residency: Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college or university in the United States at the time of application.
  • Age: Applicants must be between 16 and 25 at the time of application. 
  • Change in Status: Students who already receive a full tuition scholarship are ineligible for support by this scholarship program.
  • Courses of Study: Applicants must study American history or one of its related fields, such as political science, economics, and sociology.
  • GPA: Applicants must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or greater at the time of application. 
  • English Proficiency: Applicants must be proficient in English.
  • Financial Need: Applicants must demonstrate financial need since all scholarships provided by the Daughters of the American Revolution are need-based.
  • Major: Applicants may apply for this scholarship regardless of major since it is not limited to any specific field of study.
