About This Scholarship

Its Fund was founded by Lutheran Family Services to help Nebraskan high school seniors from low-income, minority families attend college. No of where they choose to attend college, each laureate receives an annual scholarship worth $25,000 to help with costs. Recipients may also apply for annual scholarships worth $12,500 for trade school.

Students who intend to enrol in their first year of post-secondary education the next academic year must: Graduate from a Nebraska high school or earn their GED in the current academic year; being a Nebraska resident at the time of graduation; demonstrate financial necessity, which is understood to be a low-income household with an adjusted gross family income of at least $65,000.

Eligibility Criteria For Smith Diversity Scholarship

Here are some general factors that are commonly considered for diversity scholarships:

  • Underrepresented Background: Scholarships aimed at promoting diversity often target individuals from underrepresented groups, such as racial or ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, or first-generation college students. Eligibility may require applicants to self-identify within one or more of these underrepresented groups.
  • Academic Achievement: While promoting diversity is a primary consideration, many scholarships also look for academic excellence. Applicants may need to meet certain GPA requirements or demonstrate strong academic performance.
  • Leadership and Community Involvement: Scholarships may value applicants who have shown leadership skills and active involvement in their communities. This can include participation in clubs, organizations, community service, or other extracurricular activities.
  • Demonstrated Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: Applicants may be required to submit an essay or personal statement describing their commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, and how they plan to contribute to a diverse and inclusive academic environment.
  • Financial Need: Some diversity scholarships also consider financial need as a criterion. Applicants may need to demonstrate their financial circumstances through financial documentation, such as income statements or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Recommendations: Scholarships may require letters of recommendation from teachers, mentors, or community leaders who can speak to the applicant’s character, experiences, and commitment to diversity.
