About This Scholarship

The USDA 1890 National Scholars Program is a scholarship program established by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in partnership with the nineteen 1890 Land-Grant Universities. The program aims to increase the representation of underrepresented minorities in the field of agriculture, natural resources, and related disciplines.

The 1890 Land-Grant Universities are historically Black universities that were established under the Second Morrill Act of 1890. These universities were created to provide educational opportunities for African Americans and other underrepresented groups in agriculture and the mechanical arts.

Eligibility Criteria For USDA 1890 National Scholars Program

To be eligible for the program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship: Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents.
  • Academic Status: Applicants must be currently enrolled as a full-time student at one of the 1890 Land-Grant Universities. These universities are historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) that are members of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU).
  • Major: Applicants must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, food sciences, natural resources, or a related field. The specific majors eligible for the program may vary, so it’s important to review the program guidelines for the current academic year.
  • GPA Requirement: Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent. Some scholarship programs may have higher GPA requirements, so it’s advisable to check the specific requirements of the USDA 1890 National Scholars Program.
