About This Scholarship

If you are currently pursuing a STEM degree at the postsecondary level, you might want to consider applying for the SMART Scholarship Program. This program is available to undergraduate and graduate students studying one of the 21 approved STEM disciplines of SMART. The Department of Defense (DoD) funds the scholarship and provides educational and workforce opportunities to STEM students. The program aims to inspire, cultivate, and develop STEM students to pursue their future careers. Scholarship recipients will have their full tuition fees paid and receive a stipend of up to $38,000 annually and research internship opportunities. However, recipients must commit to post-graduation employment with the Department of Defense.

Eligibility Criteria For SMART Scholarship Program

  • Education: The SMART Scholarship Program is open to students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the 21 approved STEM disciplines. Applicants must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment at a U.S.-accredited college or university.
  • Citizenship: Applicants must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or foreign nationals in the U.S. on a valid visa at the time of application. Foreign nationals must be able to obtain the appropriate visa before starting the scholarship.
  • GPA Requirements: Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Graduate applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for their most recent degree earned.
  • Military Service: Applicants are not required to have any prior military service.
  • Employment Obligation: Scholarship recipients must be willing to accept post-graduation employment with the Department of Defense (DoD) in a civilian position. The employment obligation period is equal to the length of the scholarship award received.
