About This Scholarship

Are you about to enter your senior year of high school and be a member of the Boy Scouts of America in Tennessee? In that case, you should consider applying for the Lawrence Strader Boy Scouts of America Scholarship! Members of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) from certain counties in Tennessee who come from low-income families and plan to enroll full-time in a four-year college are eligible for the scholarship. The East Tennessee Foundation, which is both a public charity and a community foundation, is the organization that will be awarding the scholarship. The residents of East Tennessee came together to form the foundation to enhance the quality of life for everyone in the region. They help students in Tennessee who need financial assistance by soliciting financial support from the public and administering the donations received. They aim to assist members of the Boy Scouts of America, Great Smoky Mountain Council, who have a low income with this scholarship. Those awarded the scholarship will pay $7,000 annually for up to four years while pursuing their degree. We strongly encourage you to apply if you are a member of the BSA and will be attending college in Tennessee this fall.

Eligibility Criteria For Lawrence Strader Boy Scouts of America Scholarship

  • Membership in the Boy Scouts of America: Applicants must be registered and active members of the Boy Scouts of America for at least three years. They must have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, have completed the requirements for Eagle Scout and are awaiting their board of review, or have completed the requirements for the Summit Award or Quartermaster Award.
  • Academic Achievement: Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. They must have graduated high school or be high school seniors planning to graduate at the end of the academic year.
  • College Enrollment: Applicants must have applied to an accredited college, university, or vocational school as full-time students. They must provide proof of acceptance into the institution.
  • Essay: Applicants must submit a 500-word essay on their experiences in Scouting and how they have used the skills they learned in Scouting to benefit their community.
  • Recommendation Letters: Applicants must provide two letters of recommendation from non-family members. One letter must be from a teacher or school official, and the other from a community leader or Scouting volunteer.
  • Financial Need: While not a strict requirement, financial need is considered when awarding the scholarship. Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine their financial needs.
