Under the supervision of the Human and Civil Rights Commission, the North Carolina Association of Educators Minority Affairs Commission established the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship in 1992. Together with the North Carolina Foundation for Public School Children, it continues. The amount of money obtained each year through donations and the Martin Luther King Jr. events determines how many scholarships are given out. Candidates must be citizens of North Carolina and enrolled in their senior year of high school at a public institution. Character, involvement in the community, and academic achievement (minimum 2.5 GPA) are all selection criteria.
