About This Scholarship

The American Legion Oratorical Contest is a nationwide speech competition for high school students. The contest aims to develop leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding and appreciation of the U.S. Constitution. The contest awards scholarships to the top three national winners, with first place receiving $18,000, second place receiving $16,000, and third place receiving $14,000. The national winners also receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., where they compete in the national finals and participate in educational and leadership activities.

The American Legion Oratorical Contest is a great opportunity for high school students to develop their public speaking and leadership skills while also learning about and celebrating the U.S. Constitution. Eligibility Criteria For American Legion Oratorical Contest

The American Legion Oratorical Contest is a speech competition for high school students that emphasizes the importance of citizenship and the U.S. Constitution. The eligibility criteria for the contest are as follows:

  • Contestants must be citizens or lawful permanent residents of the United States.
  • Contestants must be enrolled in a public, private, or parochial high school or home study program in the United States and they must be under the age of 20 as of the date of the national contest.

All the contestants must have prepared an original oration of 8 to 10 minutes in length on some aspect of the Constitution with emphasis on a citizen’s duties and obligations to our government.

Contestants must deliver their speech without the use of notes, props, or visual aids.

Contestants must participate in all levels of competition in the contest, from local to national.

The contest provides an opportunity for students to develop their skills and compete with other high school students at the local, state, and national levels.
