About This Scholarship

The Breakthrough Junior Challenge is an annual global competition that invites high school students from around the world to create engaging and creative videos that explain complex scientific concepts or theories. The challenge was established in 2015 by the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, which is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating outstanding achievements in the fields of physics, life sciences, and mathematics. The Breakthrough Junior Challenge is a great opportunity for high school students to showcase their creativity and scientific knowledge, and to potentially win a substantial college scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria For Breakthrough Junior Challenge

To be eligible for the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Age: The applicant must be between the ages of 13 and 18 as of the deadline for submissions.
  • Citizenship: The applicant must be a legal resident of one of the following countries: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia, Australia, or New Zealand.
  • Enrollment: The applicant must be enrolled in a secondary school or homeschool program at the time of submission.
  • Originality: The video entry must be the original work of the applicant and must not have been submitted to any other competition or program.
  • Language: The video must be in English, or if not in English, it must have English subtitles.
  • Length: The video must be no more than 3 minutes in length, including any titles and credits.
  • Content: The video must explain a concept or theory in STEM that is challenging, fascinating, and important to the world.

The Breakthrough Junior Challenge provides a grand prize of a $250,000 college scholarship to the winner, as well as a $100,000 science lab for their school. In addition, the winner’s teacher and school also receive prizes.
