About This Scholarship

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), a community of physical therapists committed to promoting the physical therapy profession and enhancing public health, finances the APTA Minority Scholarship Award. This scholarship provides up to $5,000 annually to several minority students in their final year of a physical therapy program and postdoctoral physical therapy faculty members seeking to advance their degrees. APTA scholarship provides financial support for minority students and faculty pursuing advanced degrees in physical therapy. To be eligible for the APTA Minority Scholarship Award, applicants must have completed all coursework and clinical requirements for a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. Students applying for the scholarship should plan to enter a residency program or apply to doctoral programs in physical therapy. Faculty should have earned their master’s degree and teach at the college level or above.

Eligibility Criteria For APTA Minority Scholarship Award

  • Minority Status: The APTA Minority Scholarship Award is only available to individuals from a minority group. This includes individuals who identify as: Black or African American, 
  • Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native,  Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and Asian.
  • Academic Status: Applicants for the APTA Minority Scholarship Award must be in their final year of a physical therapy program or be postdoctoral faculty members pursuing an advanced degree in physical therapy.
  • APTA Membership: To be eligible for the APTA Minority Scholarship Award, applicants must also be American Physical Therapy Association, members. Membership is open to physical therapists, assistants, and students in a physical therapy program.
  • U.S. Citizenship or Legal Resident Status: Applicants for the APTA Minority Scholarship Award must either be a citizen of the United States or a legal resident with a valid Green Card.
  • Financial Need: Finally, applicants for the APTA Minority Scholarship Award must demonstrate financial need. This is evaluated through the applicant’s personal statement, academic record, and financial aid status.
